How to Reapply Sunscreen: Choose Your Method

In which cases and why should you reapply sunscreen, and what should you do if you’re wearing makeup?

There’s so much talk about sun protection that it might even seem like it’s just a trend. Whether it’s a trend or not, we can confidently say that it’s an important investment in the health of your skin.

We know you’ve probably heard about the need to reapply sunscreen, and we understand that this might discourage you from using it, especially if you love wearing makeup. The good news is: you don’t always have to reapply SPF, and when you do, it’s easy and won’t harm your makeup!

Let’s finally clarify when you need to reapply SPF and how to do it without too much effort.

When should you reapply SPF?

Good news: you don’t always need to reapply sunscreen, and not everyone has to. But when should you? Here’s the list of cases:

  • After physical activity: Intense sweating during workouts or physical activity can reduce the effectiveness of SPF, so it’s worth reapplying after you finish exercising.
  • After water contact: Even if your sunscreen is water-resistant, its effectiveness may decrease after swimming or water exposure. Therefore, it’s important to reapply SPF after swimming or heavy sweating.
  • Every 2 hours in the sun for physical sunscreens: Whether you’re in the water or not, SPF with physical filters needs to be reapplied every two hours when exposed to active sunlight. SPF with chemical filters should be reapplied every 5-6 hours of sun exposure.

How to reapply SPF?

We’ll go through all the methods of reapplying sunscreen so you can choose the one that’s most comfortable and suitable for you.

Method 1: Cleanse and apply a fresh layer of cream

This is pretty simple: cleanse your skin of sweat and impurities using special cleansing wipes or thermal water, and apply a fresh layer of SPF. In this case, you can use the same sunscreen you apply in the morning.

This method is great if you don’t like layering too many products on your face, are concerned about overburdening your skin, or are prone to clogged pores.

Drawbacks:

  • Not an option if you wear makeup;
  • You need time and a place to do it (you can’t reapply it on the go);
  • You’ll need to carry a “full set” of products in your bag.

Method 2: Sunscreen powder

Sunscreen powder is a lifesaver for makeup lovers. It’s easy to apply with a brush, making it a convenient option for reapplying protection without ruining your look.

This method will especially appeal to those with oily skin, as the powder helps control shine.

Drawbacks:

  • The powder can dry out the skin and emphasize peeling (so it’s not the best option for dry skin);
  • It may not be suitable if you’re prone to clogged pores.

Method 3: SPF spray

An SPF spray is another convenient option. It’s applied over makeup and absorbs quickly, without leaving a sticky or greasy feeling. The key is to hold the spray about 15-20 cm away from your face and evenly distribute it across your skin. And of course, don’t forget to close your eyes!

Drawbacks:

  • Some products may leave stains on clothes;
  • Be careful not to inhale the particles.

Method 4: Compact SPF stick

Recently, sunscreen sticks have become especially popular, and for good reason. It’s a super convenient way to reapply SPF throughout the day. The stick is compact, easy to carry with you, and best of all, it can be applied over makeup.

Drawbacks:

  • Some sticks may leave a film or greasiness on the face;
  • An improperly chosen product can clog pores.
